Your midlife experience may be causing you to experience your relationships, your career, and your own personality with restlessness, irritability, and discontent. Not surprisingly, you may be reaching the limits of your tolerance for those aspects of your life that are out of focus or discordant. Perhaps you're feeling cheated, as though you've been promised a bill of goods that were never really delivered. You look back at your decisions, and can't figure out where you went wrong . . . exactly where your path turned and headed you off into a direction where you never really wanted to go. Maybe you're thinking (especially now that everyone's talking about a tough new year ahead of us) that it's time to make a change.
Third, and finally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your future success requires that you keep in mind one silly — but essential — truism: 'Wherever you go,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there you are!' I'm assuming that you, like all of us, have occasionally found that, at times,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the situation that you created became the situation that you left. That happens to people too frequently because they assume that the problem lies outside of themselves. Denial can completely blind you to your own contribution to difficult or objectionable situations. You can make changes in your environment to correct what appears to be an obstacle, only to discover that it keeps reappearing in each new context that you move to. It can take you years (if ever) to face the fact that the obstacles are, in fact, of your own creation, and that you re-create your dysfunction in every new environment. When you find that you're experiencing similar difficulties in different situations, you truly need to ask yourself, what's the common factor in all these similar equations? Before you change persons, places, or things, I recommend that work on changing yourself first.
First, as the generations ahead of us knew so well, 'new' isn't necessarily 'better': it's just different. The mystique of the new (that tells you it'll solve your problems) doesn't take into consideration that anything new that solves one set of problems always brings along with it a new set of problems to replace the old ones. Often, the new problems turn out to be worse than the old. Nuclear energy is one of those new approaches that promised more than it could deliver. It promised cheap energy (almost free electricity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they told us). Instead it brought risks and not only worse, but potentially permanent problems: even after fifty years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nobody knows what to do with nuclear waste. When you're considering replacing the 'poison that you know' with the 'poison that you don't know',[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's wise to take a good long look at the risks you would be buying into.
Like the change from one year to the next,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], change, and the embrace of the 'new', on its own can do little to improve your situation. As in every decision, you need self-awareness, skill, knowledge, vision and, most importantly, a plan. I never tire of repeating the Cheshire Cat's admonition to Alice: "If you don't know where you're going, any path will take you there." Reaction boils down to ignorant and cowardly instinct. Proaction derives from the essence of your humanity: your conscious awareness, informed judgment, and courageous action. The year is new; the choice is yours; the time is now.
Guys: here's were you'll need to be very, very careful. My generation (the 'boomers) are rapidly moving in to take the place of the depression generation as retirees and 'golden agers.' Most of you who will be reading this will be a generation or two behind me. That makes you many decades behind the folks who experienced years of joblessness, scarcity of food, and having to make do with (and for) the necessities of life. Theirs was the generation who learned (from bitter experience) about conserving and reusing whatever little was available to keep them and their families going. They experienced what 'luxury' really means (according to the vast majority of the world's population). They look aghast at our 'disposable planet' mentality. In our 'mentality of abundance' world, the 'poverty mentality' can find few adherents. When in doubt, we proclaim,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], throw it out and get a new one!
Of course, that could work out for you. It's always possible . . . but, seriously, what do honestly think your chances are? You really have three major strikes against you, that I think you ought to consider seriously before making any final decisions. Here they are for your consideration.
We're also suckers for advertising, and have been for decades: new, improved, better, revolutionary, an amazing breakthrough. Do you enjoy your plasma TV? Are you unhappy because your car is more than four years old? Are you pining to turn in (or give away or throw out) your old stuff and replace it with something more satisfying? A new relationship, perhaps? A new career? A new you? That's really the point, isn't it? Consumed with dissatisfaction, you really want to make a drastic change: turn in the old life for a brand new one. After all, you've now lived half your life, and you've learned a thing or two over these four or five decades, haven't you? You've made some mistakes and now, you think, it's time to put all that practical knowledge to work: out with the old, and in with the new!
Second, I think that you ought to consider the consequences that come from making reactive decisions. 'Out of the frying pan and into the fire' happens when you're more concerned with the situation that you want to escape than the risks involved in what lies ahead of you. Granted, if you're in a burning building and the flames are coming at you, climbing out of an upstairs window may be your best bet. However, seldom is a midlife choice a matter of life or death (even when it might feel that way). The proactive (and much better) choice comes from taking a careful inventory of what it is that you really want, and then making a careful plan that will get you from where you are to where you want to go. There's an old saying that's particularly apropos of midlife: 'Sin in haste,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], repent at leisure.' The better approach suggests that you apply your energies to bettering your situation within your current environment, then making considered decisions with adequate investigation and consultation that will move you forward. Quantum change is an excellent and necessary technique, but only when used wisely (and never in isolation).

Spiritual development happens best and easiest when you are happy, at peace and balanced. Certainly traumatic situations often are a strong catalyst to growth, but I would prefer to take charge of my growth rather than waiting, or looking for a disaster. The first step is to become happier. This may be obvious but elusive to achieve, hence the point of this article as it provides a method. The reason happiness is the first step is because negative thoughts are generally born in self-pity. Self-pity certainly separates us from God and the spiritual realm. It is not happiness we seek as much as the eradication of self-pity.
Self-pity makes you depressed. Sadness may look like depression but it is very different. Depression is caused by self-pity and sadness is generally caused by loneliness. Give a depressed person all sorts of wonderful things, and they stay depressed. Give a sad person a warm smile from the opposite sex and they are immediately elated. If you are sad because you are lonely and the loneliness is not just for a human companion, which would be self-pity, but for a companionship much deeper, then that sadness will not inhibit your spiritual growth. In fact, it may propel you towards it, whereas depression will definitely separate you. Depression is based on you not getting what you want or feeling worthless, it is self centered. Sadness is an unfulfilled desire to be with or do something with something or one you love, it is more of a desire to give than get.
Exercise
Working towards understanding in every moment that every situation has its opposite will significantly reduce your negative emotions by automatically increasing the positive, based on the Law of Opposites, you will have greater potential to reach a spiritual awakening and have more events on the positive side.
In knowing that everything is simultaneously its opposite,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as I lose money someone else gains. This keeps my mind positive, knowing that with calmness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], patience and perseverance, it can come back. This is the Law of Rhythm, I win I lose, I lose I win. The money may come back in the stock market, or in Forex, or in some other business,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I know that eventually, everything ends, including me.
The Method

This article is about seeing and being able to use the positive in everything. We will start with exploring the foundation of being able to live a fully positive and successful life, what prevents it, and then proceed to more detail about the method. There is no point in discussing how to be successful until we have found and corrected the reasons we are not. If the engine is at full power but the plane is tightly tied to the ground, it will not move. First, we must remove the ropes.
In my experience, investing the stock market, I watch my daily value go up and down by thousands of dollars. Yet, I have as much joy in watching the value go down as up. It took me a few years to figure out why I would enjoy seeing myself lose $4,000 in a day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which I must admit was a bit strange from an objective point of view, even for me seeing myself do it. It struck me today that it is because I know that when I lose, someone gains. Energy cannot be destroyed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it can only be changed, or moved.

Everything is a based in your mind, and the state of your mind is determined by your thoughts. Give this a moment of thought. If you did not know that something happened, could it effect you? That is not possible. You must know about it in order for it to effect your mood and state of mind. Thus, everything that effects your mood is all in your mind.
This means that if there is a big a movement down in value, there is the potential for me to have that big a movement in the positive. If I had greater skill and wisdom, I could potentially always have that big a move in the upward direction consistently. But because I am not too sharp and skilled in the stock market I go up and down rather than constantly up.
Try it for a month, a total media fast, and then see how you feel. I know that for some people their profession would make this impossible,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so I offer this for those of you who are not in that position.

EXPERIENCE WITH ALL YOUR SENSES
Some people go about their days and nights on auto-pilot. To them, they feel like they’ve seen it all so many times that nothing is new or exciting. But is this really the case?
AN EXERCISE FOR SUPER-AWARENESS
The last tool for creating and capturing writer’s inspiration I’ll discuss is Simulation.
No lesson plans to prepare. No homework to grade. No attendance or test scores to record. The upcoming week’s work clothes were laundered and ironed. It was a total respite from my normal hectic schedule; just some sweet, unhurried time for us to enjoy each other’s company.
I am in front of my laptop writing this article right now.
2. Do a “Matrix-Style Still Pan” (i.e., imagine viewing your “still” and then floating around it to get a 360 degree panoramic view.)
Feeling relaxed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I am slowing down my breathing. Now I close my eyes for ten seconds.
Here’s a quick and simple example:
Now, open your eyes and look around you and stop at the first object that interests you. It could be an object that you’ve never noticed before. Or it could be an overlooked aspect of an object you’ve seen everyday. It might even be a hint of movement that you catch in your peripheral vision.
For example, in the previous “stuffed animal” paragraph, how would the narrative change if my girlfriend left without telling me where she was going?
When I open my eyes I see my girlfriends stuffed animals on the bed. I “Freeze-Frame” it in my mind.
Do you see the endless possibilities just by assuming a different role in the same scenario?
Writing while “in the flow” of inspiration is a delicious, highly personal, and exhilarating experience. It seems like you can’t type fast enough to express your thoughts on the page!
Again, do you see the limitless writing/storytelling possibilities open to you just by simulating a different situation or scenario?
The following is an exercise that I formulated to boost awareness and magically manifest writer’s inspiration instantaneously!
If you can still see it, then go on to Step 2.

Describe what you feel.
What if all of her belongings (clothes, cosmetics, books, CD’s, etc.) were gone?
1. First, relax. Slow down your breathing.
I am aware of many feelings connected to my visual (i.e., love, gratitude, anticipation, excitement, contentment, humor, dedication, etc.).
Whenever I am at a loss for writing inspiration, I always go back to the methods outlined in this article. The exercises and answers generated from the related questions never fail to create vivid images in my mind and a mountain of ideas to write about – instantly, effortlessly, and naturally.
INCREASING AWARENESS
Imagine that you just pressed the “pause” button on your mind/eye remote control and “Freeze Framed” your image in your mind.
Grudgingly, I deal with the next reminder of our temporary separation: eating alone. To be honest, if she we here, I’d even hold my nose and eat that fishy smelling, weird tasting Thai dish she always recommended…
Describe what you think happened before your still image.
I see her stuffed animals on the bed. Her folded T-shirt is beside her pillow. I see the neatly folded blanket at the foot of the bed. Glancing back to her T-shirt, I see her mobile phone headphones and late night novel peeping out from under it.
What if I was not American, but a local Thai boyfriend instead?
Simulation is different from role playing. In role playing, you (or your story’s main character) assume a different personality and perspective. In Simulation you remain unchanged, but the situation or scenario changes.
Here’s how I do it…
This is where I imagine and describe playing a different role in the same situation. For instance, how would the above paragraph read if I were an angry boyfriend?
What if I was younger or older?
Using the above example, I could write:
SIMULATION
What if I was a cheating boyfriend (womanizer)?
Close your eyes for at least 10 seconds.

ROLE PLAY
It’s my way of creating and capturing writer’s inspiration.
For most people, the above exercise reveals that everybody’s daily lives are filled with hidden details, images, feelings, imagination, anticipation, and predictions.
Try it for yourself. I’d love to hear what you come up with.

What if I was a rich boyfriend? A poor boyfriend,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
Then I imagine what might happen after my “mental still picture.” For example, maybe after changing into some jeans and blouse, she went shopping? Or maybe she’s visiting our sick friend and waiting for me to tell her I’m home from work?
If you can’t, do the above steps again.
If the following exercise does not make you aware of some previously “hidden” things in your daily life; make you remember a long forgotten experience, place, or person; or immediately crystallize a new idea to write about, don’t waste your time reading the rest of the article.
