Several Asian countries are looking to reform their educational system and it appears they are looking at Western methods of teaching. The country that appears to be the most appealing is that of the United States and it's so called "freedom of education." Since America is the leading world power right now, it's natural to assume that America's education system is something to be modeled after. This is not a correct assumption at all. America is a world power for many reasons,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], vast amount of land, many natural resources, highly skilled/knowledgeable immigrants and a good-sized population. Asia cannot boast the same thing, as many of the urban areas are overcrowded,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there aren't enough natural resources in many cases and highly skilled immigrants are not arriving in groves.
Without regard to the vast cultural and socio-economic differences,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what is it about the American school system that is appealing or attractive to Asia? The societies of America and Asia in general cannot even be compared. Why would a country want to impose the values, which are related to education,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], of another country that is so grossly different from it's own? Is the American way of "saying it like it is" the best way? Or is the Asian way of "saving face" the best? To expect an American to correlate with others in an Asian manner is preposterous,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as it is to expect an Asian to be bold and crass like some Americans. The same goes for the educational system. Would American students, after having so much freedom in the classroom, tolerate the strictness of an Asian classroom? Unfortunately, such strictness is not even apparent in American society itself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], much less the classroom.
Is right to expect Asian students to transition well into a classroom that is less demanding? Is that was parents want for their children? Lower standards, leniency, and an average ability in school subjects? Why follow a country that scholastically, doesn't even compare to other countries in math and science? American 8th students ranked 19th in mathematics and 18th in science. Are those scores to be proud of ? Well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], considering there were 36 countries, I wouldn't think so. Asian students from Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan all ranked in the top five in mathematics and science, with Hong Kong in the top five for mathematics as well. Does this show a need to radically change an education system that seems to be working? Is it the hope and dream of Asian parents to have their children score in 18th or 19th place like America?
Asian society itself is more demanding that American society. To change the education system is to change the youth of Asia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but would it be a positive change? Are there stories of school shootings in Asia? Are there metal detectors in Asian schools? Are there drugs sold around Asian school grounds? Maybe such freedom in the classroom of American students is somehow allowing them to feel like they are able to do things that have never been expected before. Guns have been around for hundreds of years in America, but only recently have they been repeatedly used to create mayhem and horror in schools.
Maybe American schools are too lenient in their discipline and there isn't enough authority shown. It's certainly apparent that respect is a thing of the past in many American classrooms today. Once again, is this something teachers and scholars in Asia are ready to experience? Ironically though, even in America there is a movement going on trying to reform the education system - one that the president is behind. It involves requiring more testing of students as well as holding school systems accountable for their students' progress - or lack of it.
Although many negative aspects of education in America had been mentioned, there are some positive efforts taking place. Many teachers have a true empathy and caring for their students. They encourage them to have high aspirations and to follow their dreams. Another positive quality is smaller class size. A "large" classroom may have 20-25 students, but the ideal situation in American education is to have an even smaller student/teacher ratio (the number of students with one teacher) - preferably less than 20 students per class. Smaller class sizes allow for more quality individual assistance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that is simply impossible with the larger classrooms in Asia - particularly those that have anywhere from 30, 35 or even 50 students. Once again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this is an area where the United States has the advantage of simply having more space to put new schools,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unlike the space crunch (lack of available land) experienced in many parts of Asia.
Another option for Americans is to simply not put their child in a school, whether it's public or private. Many parents feel that their child would not get the quality of education they ought to have in a classroom. Homeschooling is the choice for many of these parents in America - when a parent teaches their child at home with a curriculum.
With homeschooling, education can go at the child's pace - faster or slower as necessary. Interestingly enough, homeschooled children tend to do much better than their public or private school peers in the same grade level. This may be due to the fact that they are learning in an environment that is conducive to learning and they are receiving the time and attention they need as well. This is probably not a practical alternative to Asia's education, but with any system of education, there are pros and cons.
Overall,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Asia's education system seems to be fairly successful. Granted there are problems within each system, but these problems can be addressed and resolved without the overhaul of the entire method of educating. Maybe some Asian schools are too strict and rigid or have too many students in a class. While the number of students within a class may not be able to change, the rigidity may. Discipline is important in a class or even a school system. A school must have a system of order and respect, without them there is chaos. Is disrespect a catalyst to chaos? Of course. Is chaos conducive to learning? Of course not. While there may be areas that may need to be changed in Asia's education system, following the Americans is not the answer. Compare what is needed in Asian education with what is needed in Asian classrooms and there will be the perfect balance.
